Short reflections on design, making and craft.

What we can learn from AI

Artificial Intelligence is now almost irreversibly embedded in our culture.

Naturally, many from the creative industries view AI as a threat, however it can teach us to be better artists.

It highlights the negative aspects of specialisation — many artists are self-limiting, creating in the pre-determined parameters of their field and only drawing inspiration from a narrow cross section of the creative landscape. AI also emphasises the power of letting go —our creative work is often negatively entangled with ego and emotion.

Foremost, AI teaches us to get out of our own creative box. To draw inspiration from the widest possible range of sources. It demonstrates there is no wrong creative work. There is only creative work and better creative work.

Perhaps most importantly, AI teaches us to separate ego and work, to not get too precious with ideas and to iterate, a lot.
